CAPEX or PPA?

The roof can be the same while the commercial structure is completely different. The right choice depends on capital, risk appetite and how the business wants to capture the value.

CAPEX ownership

The business funds and owns the system. This can maximise direct exposure to the asset's long-term energy value, but requires upfront capital and ownership responsibility.

Power Purchase Agreement

A PPA can allow a business to buy electricity generated on site under a contractual structure without making the same upfront investment as direct ownership. Pricing, term, responsibilities and exit provisions need careful review.

Financed ownership

Finance or hire-purchase structures can sit between the two: the business works toward ownership while spreading capital requirements over time.

What should be compared?

Do not compare only headline electricity prices. Compare cash flow, contract length, maintenance, indexation, ownership, guarantees and the value of optionality over the project's life.
