Commercial Solar for Cold Storage: Why Load Shape Matters

Why cold storage can be a strong commercial solar candidate, and why half-hourly electricity data still decides the real case.

Why cold storage is different

Refrigeration keeps drawing power when many buildings are quiet. If that daytime load overlaps with solar production, more of the electricity can be used on site rather than exported.

What that changes

Every solar kWh used behind the meter can replace a kWh that would otherwise be purchased from the grid. The value depends on the site's actual tariff and demand profile.

Battery? Maybe.

A strong refrigeration baseload may already absorb much of the solar. Storage becomes more interesting where there is recurring surplus, expensive later-day demand, an export constraint or another clear flexibility value.

What we need first

Postcode, rough roof area and annual electricity use are enough for a first screen. A bill improves it. Half-hourly data is the point where the battery case becomes serious.

Site-specific analysis matters. Generation, savings, carbon impact and storage value depend on location, consumption, tariff, export, grid and final engineering.
