Commercial Solar + Battery: When Does Storage Add Value?
A practical guide to when commercial battery storage can add value alongside solar, and when it may not.
Start with the mismatch
Solar produces during the day. The site may need electricity at different times. Storage only earns its place when moving electricity through time creates enough extra value.
Where value can appear
That may be through shifting surplus solar, reducing expensive peak imports, working around certain grid constraints or accessing suitable flexibility opportunities.
Why annual consumption is not enough
Two sites can each use 2 GWh per year and still have very different battery economics. Half-hourly data shows when the electricity is actually needed.
Our rule
Solar should first prove its own case. The battery then has to prove that its additional value justifies the extra capital, losses and operating complexity.
